Indonesia backs tropical forest financing facility initiative
Indonesia has reaffirmed its support for the Tropical Forest Financing Facility (TFFF), an initiative proposed by Brazil aimed at closing the funding gap for tropical forest conservation, ecosystem restoration, and the empowerment of indigenous and local communities.
Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, representing President Prabowo Subianto at an international forum attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to protecting the world’s tropical forests.
“Indonesia looks forward to closer cooperation with Brazil in formulating the mechanisms and work plans for the TFFF,” Zulkifli said as quoted on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
He underlined the critical role of tropical forests as key pillars of global climate resilience, biodiversity hotspots, and sources of livelihood for millions of people.
“The responsibility to protect forests is not only that of forest-owning nations but of the global community as a whole. One of the main challenges is the limited and uncertain funding for conservation,” he noted.
Zulkifli cited that the TFFF would mobilize both public and private resources through blended finance schemes, aligning economic incentives with environmental objectives and creating opportunities to integrate conservation with sustainable development.
He also highlighted the importance of safeguards for indigenous peoples and local communities to ensure their rights, environmental integrity, and transparent governance are protected.
“Indonesia stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure tropical forests continue to function as carbon sinks, biodiversity sanctuaries, and sources of life for the world,” he said.
The TFFF is an initiative driven by countries in the Global South to finance the conservation of tropical and humid subtropical forests. First proposed at COP28 in Dubai, the facility is expected to be officially launched at COP30 in Brazil.
