Sugiono: "There will be no peace without an independent Palestine"
Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, representing President Prabowo Subianto, attended the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Doha, Qatar.
The summit was convened following an Israeli attack on Qatar on September 9, 2025.
Sugiono's participation in the summit follows President Prabowo’s visit to Doha, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on September 12, 2025, which affirmed Indonesia's solidarity with Qatar and commitment to continue supporting the Palestinian struggle while encouraging international solidarity to maintain peace in the region.
In his speech, Foreign Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia's solidarity with the people and government of Qatar. "Israel's aggression last week was not only a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty but also a clear breach of international law, the UN Charter, and the principles of the OIC, and it represents a serious threat to both regional and global peace," he said s quoted in a statement on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
He also reiterated Indonesia's full support for the Palestinian people. "There will be no lasting peace without a two-state solution. The path to peace remains clear: the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital," he emphasized.
The summit resulted in a Joint Communiqué which contained a collective condemnation of Israel’s attack on Doha as a clear violation of sovereignty and international law, and reaffirmed solidarity with Qatar while supporting Qatar, Egypt, and the United States' mediation efforts. The communiqué also expressed a shared commitment to continue pushing for the Two-State Solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), consisting of 57 member states including Indonesia, was established in 1969. The Emergency Summit in Doha marked a significant moment for the Islamic world to demonstrate collective leadership in advocating for peace, justice, and solidarity in the region.
The summit was led by the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and attended by 22 heads of state and government members of the OIC and the Arab League, including the Presidents of Turkey, Palestine, Iran, the Prime Ministers of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Malaysia.
