Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono has confirmed the death of Zetro Leonardo Purba, an Indonesian Foreign Ministry staff member in Lima, Peru, after being shot by an unidentified assailant on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, who was shot several hours ago in Lima and has passed away," Sugiono said in a video statement on Tuesday. "We have conveyed our condolences to Peru's Foreign Ministry and local police, urging a thorough investigation into this case."

Sugiono said he had personally spoken by phone with the victim’s wife, Priscilia, as well as Ambassador Ricky Suhendar in Lima.

"The late officer leaves behind his wife and three children, Emanuela, Zefanya, and Zebadia. We pray that he rests in the best place by God’s side, and we have asked his wife to remain strong during this painful time," he said.

The minister emphasized that the foreign ministry would ensure full support for the victim’s family, including arrangements to repatriate the body to Indonesia.

"We are also committed to assisting in the continuation of the children’s education," he said.

Sugiono called on all Indonesian diplomats and staff worldwide to remain vigilant.

"This is a tragedy none of us wished for. Safety is our top priority as we carry out our duties for the nation," he said.

Investigations into the shooting are ongoing in coordination with Peruvian authorities. Peruvian police confirmed on Tuesday that a diplomatic staff member of Indonesia’s embassy in Lima was killed in Lince district, but clarified that the victim was not the ambassador, contrary to some media reports.

“We regret the murder of a diplomatic worker of the Indonesian embassy in the district of Lince, Lima. We immediately activated the Cerco plan and began investigations to identify and capture those responsible,” the Peruvian National Police said in a statement on X at 10:45 a.m. local time.

Cerco Plan is a tactical deployment strategy used by the Peruvian National Police (PNP).
