Megawati Soekarnoputri, Chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), has reappointed Hasto Kristiyanto as the Secretary-General of the party for the 2025-2030 period.

"Hasto reassumes position as PDI-P secretary-general" PDI-P spokesman Ansy Lema talked to Indonesia Business Post on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

Andreas Hugo Pareira, a member of PDI-P's National Executive Board (DPP), who confirmed that the appointment had already been finalized.

"Yes, it’s true," Andreas said as quoted by detik.com, responding to inquiries on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

The announcement was also confirmed by Ganjar Pranowo, PDI-P's Head of Governance and Regional Autonomy Division. "It’s official," Ganjar said when contacted separately.

This decision comes after Megawati had previously assumed the role of Secretary-General herself during the party's congress held in Bali. At that time, Hasto had just received an amnesty from President Prabowo Subianto in relation to a corruption case involving the non-procedural appointment of party cadre Harun Masiku as House of Representatives (DPR) legislator in replacement of a deceased elected PDI-P candidate.

Deep trust

Political analyst Hendri Satrio said that Megawati's deep trust in Hasto is apparently a significant factor behind the expected decision.

"Ibu Mega [Megawati] has a strong belief in Hasto. He meets with her regularly, both in the morning and afternoon. It’s understandable that, given this close relationship, Hasto would be chosen again," Satrio said.

He said further that there are no major political rifts or opposition to Hasto's reappointment, noting that the party's internal dynamics are closely aligned with Megawati's leadership.

"I don’t foresee any major disruptions or challenges. Everything is aligned with Ibu Mega's leadership," he added.

The latest episode of events comes as PDI-P prepares for its first plenary meeting after the party congress, where the long-awaited appointment of the Secretary-General is expected to take place. The appointment of Hasto, who has held the position in the past, is seen as a logical continuation of the party's current leadership structure.
