Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Megawati Soekarnoputri, has compiled a list of notable figures to be endorsed in the 2024 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election.
"Many names have emerged, with nearly 8 names already being considered. There are several prominent figures that are already on the radar of Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri," PDI-P Secretary General, Hasto Kristiyanto, said on Monday, May 13, 2024.
Although having identified these individuals, Hasto refrained from disclosing them to the public. He mentioned that the list of names is still under discussion and subject to change.
Furthermore, Hasto said that the party is still in the process of screening potential candidates. He also couldn't confirm whether Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati is among the prominent figures identified by Megawati.
According to Hasto, Sri Mulyani possesses commendable credentials both nationally and internationally. He expressed pride in her performance and achievements as the country's treasurer.
Additionally, Hasto highlighted Sri Mulyani's global experience in finance, which PDI-P intends to utilize as an asset in educating party cadres. He believes that Sri Mulyani's expertise can serve as a foundation for PDI-P cadres in making public policy decisions in the economic sector.
Apart from Sri Mulyani, national media have described Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini, Minister of State Administrative and Bureaucratic Reforms Adullah Azwar Anas, former Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, Speaker of the Jakarta Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) Prasetyo Edi Marsudi, as well as former Banten governor and actor Rano Karno, as potential names for the Jakarta governorship from PDI-P.
Hasto emphasized further that their party cannot independently endorse regional leaders in the Jakarta Gubernatorial Election as they still require collaboration with other political parties.
"We have divided tasks, with some handling communication with Gerindra, others with PAN (National Mandate Party), Golkar, and so on," he said.
The General Election Commission (KPU) has set the simultaneous Gubernatorial Election across the country for November 27, 2024. The registration of candidate pairs to be endorsed will take place from August 27 to 29, 2024.
