The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia has strongly condemned the killing of more than 170 journalists by the Israeli military since October 2023.

In the most recent incident, the Israeli military launched a targeted attack on media workers in Gaza, including a deadly strike near Al-Shifa Hospital. This event adds to the growing list of systematic violence directed at journalists working in conflict zones.

AJI Indonesia accused that these attacks are part of a broader strategy to silence the truth and suppress independent voices reporting on the ongoing atrocities and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“The attacks come amidst a prolonged blockade and oppression that has lasted for more than 21 months. AJI called for an immediate end to Israel’s media blockade, which it claims conceals crimes in the region,” President of AJI Indonesia, Nany Afrida, said in a statement as quoted by Indonesia Business Post on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

She said AJI stands in solidarity with journalists who continue to report accurately and independently despite the dangers. AJI also called for full protection for journalists reporting on Palestinian issues, regardless of nationality, she added.

Finally, AJI demanded that the UN Security Council hold Israel accountable, describing the killings of journalists as part of a genocidal act and the erasure of truth.

As previously reported, Al Jazeera Media Network has condemned the targeted killing of its journalists in Gaza as a "blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom." The network reported that its correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with photographers Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on August 10, 2025. The attack occurred near Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital, where the journalists were sheltering in a media tent. Two freelancers, Momen Aliwa and Mohammed al-Khalidi, were also killed in the strike.

Al Jazeera stated that these journalists were among the last voices reporting from inside Gaza as international media remained barred by Israel. The network holds the Israeli occupation forces and government responsible for deliberately targeting and assassinating its journalists. Al Jazeera emphasized that such actions are a violation of international law and a direct assault on the right to free expression.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also condemned the killings, urging Israel to provide evidence supporting its claims that the journalists were affiliated with militant groups. CPJ emphasized that under international law, journalists are protected persons and should not be targeted during conflicts, as reported by AP.

In response to the killings, protests have erupted worldwide, with demonstrators demanding accountability and an end to the targeting of journalists in conflict zones. The international community continues to call for an independent investigation into the incident and for measures to ensure the safety of journalists reporting in Gaza.
