Indonesia, in collaboration with 27 other nations and organizations, has strongly  condemned Israel’s announcement of its intention to impose full military control over the Gaza Strip.

The Ministerial Committee mandated by the Joint Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit, says the Israeli move constitutes a “dangerous and unacceptable escalation” and is seen as a flagrant violation of international law. The collective statement describes Israel’s actions as an attempt to further entrench its illegal occupation of Palestinian territories through the use of force, thus undermining international legitimacy.

The statement, which includes contributions from Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and others, condemns Israel’s actions as part of a broader pattern of human rights violations, including the killing of civilians, deliberate starvation, forced displacement, and annexation of Palestinian land.

These actions, according to the signatories, may amount to crimes against humanity and have obliterated any remaining prospects for a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“The situation in Gaza has been particularly dire, as the region has been under a comprehensive blockade and aggression for nearly two years, with civilians enduring extreme hardship and suffering,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

Indonesia’s role

The foreign ministry expressed deep concern that the ongoing escalation would lead to further destabilization of the region, severely undermining both regional and international peace efforts. The statement highlights the grave humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, where millions of innocent Palestinians are subjected to relentless violence, military occupation, and a humanitarian blockade that affects all aspects of daily life.

Indonesia condemned these actions as being in violation of international law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, which regulate the conduct of war and the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

Indonesia, therefore, called for immediate action to end Israel's aggressive military campaign in Gaza and to safeguard the rights of Palestinian civilians. Indonesia’s position reflects its commitment to the Palestinian cause and its strong advocacy for peaceful resolution to the conflict based on justice, international law, and the rights of the Palestinian people.

Demands for action

The joint statement outlined urgent measures and demands to address the violence and humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza:

  1. Immediate and comprehensive ceasefire: The statement calls for an immediate cessation of Israeli military operations in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. It also demands the cessation of all military attacks on civilian infrastructure and civilian populations, as these actions are deemed violations of international humanitarian law.
  2. Unimpeded humanitarian access: The international community demands that Israel, as the occupying power, immediately allow the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, including essential supplies such as food, medicine, and fuel. This assistance should be provided on an adequate scale to address the urgent needs of the civilian population and ensure that relief agencies and international organizations are able to operate freely without obstruction. The statement stresses that these actions are in full accordance with international humanitarian law.
  3. Support for ceasefire and prisoner exchange efforts: The statement reiterates support for ongoing ceasefire efforts spearheaded by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, as well as efforts to reach an agreement on the exchange of prisoners and hostages. These efforts are seen as crucial steps toward de-escalation, alleviating suffering, and restoring some degree of peace in the region.
  4. Reconstruction and international support: The signatories calls for immediate implementation of an Arab-Islamic reconstruction plan for Gaza, aiming to rebuild the region after years of destruction. They also call for active participation in the upcoming reconstruction conference to be held in Cairo, where international contributions and expertise will be needed to facilitate Gaza’s recovery.
  5. Opposition to forced displacement: The joint statement strongly rejects any efforts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their homes, whether in Gaza, the West Bank, or East Jerusalem. This includes the condemnation of any attempts to alter the demographic composition of Palestinian territories, particularly in Jerusalem. The statement further calls for the preservation of legal and historical status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem, with a special emphasis on the custodianship role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
  6. Commitment to a two-state solution: The statement reaffirms the collective commitment to a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution. The signatories stress the need for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This solution is viewed as the only viable path to lasting peace in the region, and its realization is in full accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

Holding Israel accountable

The statement also places full responsibility on the Israeli occupation for the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the West Bank. Indonesia and the other signatory countries call on the international community, particularly the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, to fulfill their legal and humanitarian obligations by taking urgent action to halt Israel's illegal policies. These policies, according to the statement, are aimed at preventing the realization of a just and lasting peace and eliminating any prospects for a two-state solution.

Indonesia, along with other countries in the statement, calls for immediate international intervention to end Israel's actions, restore peace efforts, and hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law and human rights.

Call for action

Indonesia emphasized the need for the United Nations Security Council to take a more active role in addressing the situation, urging the international body to respond decisively to Israel's ongoing violations.

The joint statement also highlighted the outcomes of the High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, which stressed the urgent need for time-bound, operational measures to end the war in Gaza.

Call for accountability and justice

Indonesia and the signatories have reiterated their call for accountability and justice, asking the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take concrete steps to stop Israel's illegal aggressive policies, support the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, and work toward the creation of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
