BMKG terminates tsunami early warning following M8.7 Kamchatka earthquake
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has terminated the tsunami early warning issued in response to the magnitude 8.7 undersea earthquake that struck off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
In an official statement released early Thursday morning, July 31, 2025, BMKG confirmed that all Indonesian marigram (tsunami tide gauge) readings have shown a significant decrease in wave activity, indicating that tsunami energy has dissipated and no further threat is expected.
“We, BMKG, are terminating the Tsunami Early Warning caused by the Kamchatka Earthquake (Mag: 8.7, Date: 30-Jul-25, 06:24:50 WIB), because all marigrams in Indonesia show a pattern that is already tapering and diminishing,” BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director, Daryono, said.
The powerful earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers due to subduction along the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench, initially prompted tsunami alerts for parts of eastern Indonesia.
BMKG had earlier warned of potential wave activity below 0.5 meters in 10 coastal regions, including Talaud Islands, Manokwari, Biak, and Jayapura.
No damage or casualties have been reported in Indonesian territories, and all initially affected areas are now deemed safe.
Pacific-wide impacts
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) had also issued alerts for Russia, Japan, Alaska, the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii, and multiple Pacific island nations.
Several territories, including Guam, Palau, Tonga, and American Samoa, took preventive evacuation measures, citing risks of waves between 0.3 to 3 meters. Most regions continue to monitor wave activity closely, with local authorities maintaining temporary coastal restrictions until wave behavior stabilizes.
