AGO to question State officials over suspected adulterated rice scandal
The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has planned to summon several state officials in connection with the ongoing investigation into a major case of suspected rice adulteration, locally known as beras oplosan, as authorities expand their probe beyond the private sector to examine possible institutional lapses.
"The summons will certainly develop in that direction. It will involve relevant parties, not all state officials," AGO spokesman Anang Supriatna said on Friday, July 25, 2025.
Officials potentially to be questioned include those from the Ministry of Agriculture, State Logistics Agency (Bulog), and the National Food Agency (Bapanas).
“For example, from the Ministry of Agriculture, maybe from Bulog later, and perhaps from the National Food Agency it's all possible. This could expand,” Anang said.
He said further that the state institutions are not under investigation per se, but will be asked to provide information and context to support the AGO’s probe. As of now, however, there is no confirmed schedule for their questioning.
The investigation gained momentum after President Prabowo Subianto publicly denounced the practice of rice adulteration as a criminal act and instructed both Attorney General ST Burhanuddin and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to pursue the perpetrators.
“This is a crime. I’ve ordered the Attorney General and the Police Chief to investigate and take action,” Prabowo said during the launch of the Red-and-White Village Cooperatives in Klaten, Central Java, on Monday, July 21, 2025.
According to the President, fraudulent rice mixing practices are costing the Indonesian public nearly Rp100 trillion (US$6.12 billion) each year.
He underscored the contradiction between the government’s hard efforts to increase revenue through taxation and customs, and the losses incurred from illicit food industry practices.
“I cannot accept this. I swore an oath before the people to uphold the Constitution and the laws. I order the Attorney General and Police Chief to investigate and act,” he said.
So far, the AGO has summoned six private companies for questioning in relation to the case, with interviews set to begin on Monday, July 28, 2025. The companies are:
•PT Wilmar Padi Indonesia
•PT Food Station
•PT Belitang Panen Raya
•PT Unifood Candi Indonesia
•PT Subur Jaya Indotama
•PT Sentosa Umar Utama Lestari Java Group
Summonses were sent on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
