President to launch three key programs ahead of 80th Independence anniversary
President Prabowo Subianto is set to inaugurate three flagship national programs this July as part of the government's effort to uplift communities and mark the approach of Indonesia’s 80th year of independence.
Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, said the initiatives will focus on education, rural economic empowerment, and student health.
1. Sekolah Rakyat (People’s Schools)
This month, President Prabowo will open 100 Sekolah Rakyat (SR) in the first phase of operations. The initiative aims to provide educational access to children from extremely poor families, especially those who have been excluded from regular schooling despite free education policies.
Hasan said that children in the poorest income group (decile 1) often remain out of school due to indirect costs like transportation, meals, and other school needs.
“This responsibility must be taken on by the state,” Hasan told a press conference at the National Scout Headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Sekolah Rakyat will use the national curriculum, and students will reside on campus with the government providing three meals a day.
2. Koperasi Desa Merah Putih (Red-and-White Village Cooperatives)
On July 19, 2025 President Prabowo is also scheduled to launch the Koperasi Desa Merah Putih in Klaten, Central Java. This event will mark the start of the government’s ambitious plan to build 80,400 village- and subdistrict-level cooperatives across the country.
As many as 92 Red-and-White cooperatives are expected to begin operations on the launch date. The program is projected to create two million jobs, reduce poverty, curb urban migration, and enhance rural human capital.
President Prabowo has mandated that cooperatives serve as exclusive distributors of subsidized goods, including 3-kg LPG canisters, subsidized fertilizers, and affordable food staples. The cooperatives are expected to shorten distribution chains and ensure rural communities have access to essential goods at lower prices.
3. Free health screenings for students
Also launched this month is a nationwide student health screening initiative. This program will cover elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. Students will receive free check-ups, including dental and ear examinations, and screenings for tuberculosis (TB) symptoms and mental health risks.
“This is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of human resources. Health is just as important as education,” Hasan said.
These three programs represent core elements of Prabowo’s vision for a more inclusive, healthier, and self-sufficient Indonesia, as the country prepares to celebrate eight decades of independence in 2025.
