Indonesia, Russia reinforce ties ahead of Prabowo’s Russian visit
Indonesia and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral ties across political, economic, and strategic fronts, as Foreign Minister Sugiono met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Monday, June 16, 2025 ahead of President Prabowo Subianto’s upcoming state visit to Russia.
“We are committed to strengthening our relationship and partnership for the mutual prosperity of both of our peoples,” Sugiono said as quoted in a statement on June 18, 2025.
He extended gratitude to Russia for supporting Indonesia’s full membership in BRICS.
“I thank Minister Lavrov for Russia’s support on Indonesia’s accession and acceptance into BRICS as a full-fledged member,” he said.
Sugiono further congratulated Russia on its national day, celebrated on June 12, and noted the historic significance of the visit. “This visit also holds a very special significance as it marks the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia diplomatic relations.”
He stressed that this visit was timely in preparing for President Subianto’s visit to Saint Petersburg on June 19–20, where the Indonesian head of state is scheduled to meet with President Vladimir Putin and attend the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
On the economic front, both sides discussed avenues to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, and joint development. “There are also untapped potentials,” Sugiono remarked. “We need to explore further to increase and strengthen our trade and investment relations.”
He specifically invited Russian investors to collaborate with Indonesia’s newly launched sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, which President Subianto established in February.
“It will function as the investment vehicle that can partner with Russia’s investment authority or businesses to tap the untapped potentials,” he said.
Sugiono also agreed to implement the outcomes of the 13th Indonesia–Russia Joint Commission Meeting held in April 2025, and committed to expanding collaboration in key areas including renewable energy, agriculture, technical and cyber security, artificial intelligence, and education.
“We want more opportunities for Indonesian students and officers to come and study the Russian language,” Sugiono added, underlining the importance of people-to-people exchanges to build long-term mutual understanding.
Turning to global concerns, Sugiono said Indonesia stood ready to act as a bridge to ease regional and global tensions.
“We agreed that any escalation needs to be stopped and any dispute needs to be brought to the negotiation table,” he said in reference to the conflict in the Middle East, a concern echoed by Minister Lavrov.
Concluding his remarks, Sugiono praised the hospitality of his Russian counterpart and extended an invitation to visit Jakarta.
