Indonesia-Russia open new chapter in infrastructure cooperation
Indonesia and Russia are set to expand collaboration in infrastructure development, a commitment confirmed during a meeting between Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), and Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchanov, on Monday, June 16, 2025.
“I warmly welcome Ambassador Sergei Tolchanov and appreciate the strong commitment to strengthening the partnership between Indonesia and the Russian Federation,” AHY said as quoted in a statement on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
The meeting aimed to bolster bilateral relations and identify concrete cooperation opportunities, especially in maritime infrastructure, shipbuilding, technology transfer, and integrated infrastructure systems.
AHY emphasized that the administration of President Prabowo Subianto is focused on delivering an ambitious national agenda, targeting 8 percent annual economic growth while reinforcing food, water, and energy security. This vision also includes improving public welfare through better education, healthcare, and poverty reduction initiatives.
“Infrastructure plays a vital role in achieving these goals. That’s why we bring the message ‘Infrastructure for All.’ We are not just building concrete structures; we are building access, hope, better lives, and delivering real impact for our people,” AHY said.
He also highlighted Indonesia’s five strategic infrastructure priorities, which were presented during International Conference on Infrastructure 2025, namely food and water security, clean energy, equal connectivity, resilient and livable cities, and sustainable infrastructure financing reform. These areas, he said, offer significant potential for collaboration with Russia.
“I see today’s meeting not only as a reaffirmation of our strong bilateral relationship but also as a launchpad for actionable, strategic cooperation,” AHY cited.
He expressed appreciation for active participation of the Russian delegation at the conference, including representatives from Rosatom and Rusal, and extended gratitude to Ambassador Tolchanov for Russia’s continued interest in Indonesia’s development agenda.
With Indonesia now a full member of BRICS as of January 2025, AHY reiterated the country's commitment to playing an active role in global forums and fostering collaboration with fellow member nations, particularly in sustainable development and climate resilience.
The high-level meeting was attended by key representatives from both nations, including Russian Minister-Counsellor Veronika Novoseltseva, embassy staff, and leaders from Russian state and corporate sectors. Indonesian officials from various deputy ministries and special advisory roles were also present, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the discussions.
This renewed momentum in Indonesia-Russia cooperation marks a promising step toward shared progress in infrastructure and regional development.
