The Indonesian Navy has received a land asset grant from the Sumenep Regency Administration, East Java, for the construction of a naval base (Lanal) on Madura Island, considered an important element in strengthening the country's defense system in eastern Indonesia, particularly within the Second Indonesian Archipelago Sea Lane (ALKI II) area.

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali personally witnessed the signing of the Regional Grant Agreement (NPHD) and the Minutes of Handover (BAST) at the Indonesian Navy’s Second Fleed Headquarters in Surabaya, East Java, on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

The asset in the form of 10.17 hectares of land located in Patean Village, Batuan District, Sumenep Regency, was officially handed over by Sumenep Regent Achmad Fauzi Wongsojudo to Commander of Fifth Main Naval Base (Lantamal) in Surabaya, Admiral Arya Delano.

In his remarks, Admiral Ali emphasized the importance of Lanal's presence in Madura considering the strategic position of the Madura Strait as a shipping lane and a vital area in maintaining the sovereignty of Indonesia's maritime territory.

"This is an important area that needs to be guarded with full force, and Lanal Sumenep will play a crucial role in maintaining the stability of maritime security," he said.

He said further that the construction of Lanal Sumenep is a mutual symbiosis between the Indonesian Navy and the community.

“The existence of this base not only strengthens national defense, but is also expected to be able to encourage local economic development and improve the welfare of the surrounding community,” the Navy chief said.

Sumenep Regent Achmad Fauzi expressed his commitment to continue supporting the development of the defense sector as part of regional progress. He hopes that the presence of Lanal will be a trigger for new economic growth in Madura.

The construction of Lanal in Sumenep is part of the Indonesian Navy's long-term planning to strengthen national maritime defense, while supporting equitable development and connectivity between regions, especially in eastern Indonesia.

Lanal Sumenep is projected to be under the Fifth Main Naval Base (Lantamal) in Surabaya which currently oversees eight Lanals, namely Lanal Cilacap, Lanal Tegal, and Lanal Semarang in Central Java; Lanal Yogyakarta in Yogyakarta; Lanal Malang, Lanal Batuporon, and Lanal Banyuwangi in East Java; and Lanal Denpasar in Bali.
