Pertamina launches oil & gas exploration in Natuna to strengthen energy security
Pertamina East Natuna, a subsidiary of Pertamina’s upstream oil and gas division, has commenced exploration in the North Natuna Sea as part of efforts to increase Indonesia’s domestic hydrocarbon reserves.
The project, managed by the Regional Java Subholding Upstream Pertamina, covers a working area of 10,484 square kilometers with water depths ranging from 130 to 150 meters, approximately 270 kilometers from Natuna Besar Island.
Under a production-sharing contract with the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas), Pertamina East Natuna holds full ownership and operational control over the block for the next 30 years, starting from June 2023. The exploration campaign includes the verification and validation of potential hydrocarbon resources.
“To confirm the estimated resources, we are conducting a 3D seismic data acquisition covering 1,166 square kilometers to support new oil and gas discoveries in the North Natuna Sea,” Indra Yuliandri, Vice President for Exploration Regional Java Subholding Upstream Pertamina, said in a statement on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
Key technical and non-technical milestones in the exploration phase have been successfully completed and the company has also coordinated with the Natuna local administration to ensure smooth collaboration.
The completion of 3D seismic data acquisition in Pertamina East Natuna’s working area marks an operational achievement, as the program was completed ahead of schedule, within budget, with no accidents, and yielding high-quality data.
Currently, preparations for exploration drilling are underway. Technical assessments and operational planning will precede the drilling phase, scheduled to commence in 2026.
With a well-planned strategy and the application of advanced exploration technologies, Pertamina East Natuna is optimistic about maximizing hydrocarbon potential in East Natuna, one of Indonesia’s outermost territories. This initiative not only supports oil and gas exploration but also aligns with the broader vision of enhancing national energy security while fostering economic benefits for the country.
Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, reiterated the company’s commitment to investing in upstream operations to boost hydrocarbon production.
“Pertamina is determined to strengthen its existing business to support the government’s target of achieving energy self-sufficiency while driving national economic growth,” he said.
