Erick Thohir to review Pertamina structure, eyes SOEs reforms

Pertamina-Patra-Niaga
Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir has emphasized to review the structure within State energy company PT Pertamina following the revelation of the Rp193.7 trillion (US$11.7 billion) corruption case related to mismanagement of crude oil and refinery products, which befalls top management in its subsidiaries.
The Pertamina case occurred in the environment of PT Pertamina subholdings and the Cooperation Contract Contractor (KKKS) in 2018-2023. One of those named as suspects is President Director of Pertamina’s commercial and trading subholding, Pertamina Patra Niaga, Riva Siahaan.
"We will review in full what improvements can be made in the future," Erick said as quoted by Antara on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
He added that he will also communicate with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia and the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) to find a solution.
"We are reviewing whether it is possible that 1-2 companies should merge so that later there will be no exchange of sales between the refinery (Kilang Pertamina Internasional) and Pertamina Patra Niaga," he said.
Erick said the Ministry of SOEs would respect the legal process at the Attorney General's Office and touched on coordination in old cases, such as insurance firms Asabri and Jiwasraya.
Asabri is a state-owned insurance and pension fund for the military, the police and Defense Ministry employees. Businessman Benny Tjokrosaputro, one of the defendants in the Asabri case, which was related to the corruption in financial management and investment funds, was sentenced by the Corruption Court within the Central Jakarta District Court in January 2023 for causing State financial losses of Rp22.788 trillion.
Meanwhile, PT Asuransi Jiwasraya, which was established in 1859, had its business license revoked by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) according to the OJK's decision on January 16, 2025. Previously, Jiwasraya was a giant financial scandal that was detected in 2004 for causing State financial losses of up to Rp16.81 trillion.
In regards with the position of President Director of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Erick said that he has yet to determine the name of the replacement for the detained Riva Siahaan, while adding that he will discuss about it with President Commissioner of Pertamina first.
