Bukit Asam books records highest coal sales in history
State-owned coal mining company PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) booked total coal sales of 42.9 million tons throughout 2024, an increase by 16 percent from the previous year (yoy), marking the highest coal sales record in history.
In comparison, PTBA's coal sales in 2020 were recorded at 26.1 million tons, then increased to 28.4 million tons in 2021, to 31.7 million tons in 2022, and to 37 million tons in 2023.
Corporate Secretary of PTBA, Niko Chandra, said that this record achievement was supported by coal exports of 20.3 million tons in 2024, an increase by 30 percent annually.
Meanwhile, the realization of Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) reached 22.6 million tons, an increase by 6 percent compared to the previous year.
"PTBA's coal sales are still dominated by domestic market, but the export portion continues to increase. Currently, the domestic market share is 53 percent, while exports reach 47 percent," Niko said in a statement as quoted on Friday, January 31, 2025.
PTBA continues to optimize the potential of the main market, including exports to India which increased by 32 percent to 6.4 million tons. In addition, exports to Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia also jumped significantly.
Sales to Vietnam increased by 250 percent to 3 million tons, exports to Thailand reached 1.6 million tons or increased by 153 percent, and exports to Malaysia jumped 221 percent to 888.7 thousand tons.

For 2025, PTBA is targeting coal production of 50 million tons, sales of 50.1 million tons, and transportation of 43.2 million tons.
In addition to the increase in sales, PTBA also recorded the highest coal production record, which was 43.3 million tons throughout 2024. Coal transportation also reached the highest figure, which was 38.2 million tons.
For 2025, PTBA is targeting coal production of 50 million tons, sales of 50.1 million tons, and transportation of 43.2 million tons.
