Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto recently met with Abdulnasser Ibrahim Saif Bin Kalban, CEO of Emirate Global Aluminium (EGA), discussing the continuation of cooperation in developing aluminium production through the development of a smelter that processes bauxite in Indonesia.
EGA is the world's largest producer of premium aluminum in the world. Having aluminum smelters in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, it is the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) outside the oil and gas sector.
EGA recently has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strategic cooperation with PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM) in encouraging production expansion and at the same time encouraging the downstreaming of an integrated and sustainable aluminium industry for Indonesia.
Abdulnasser said that EGA has agreed to cooperate with INALUM to expand the smelter in northern Sumatra to 400,000 tons per year.
However, this project has not been realized due to the high cost of electricity and low-carbon electricity supply, which is used to produce green aluminum.
EGA has independently developed technology in terms of aluminum smelting and conducted various studies for the use of high technology at the INALUM Kuala Tanjung smelter, North Sumatra to achieve increased production of up to 400,000 tons per year, so that it is expected to explore new potentials in the aluminum processing industry sector in Indonesia.
Speaking at the recent World Government Summit 2025, Abdulnasser said that Indonesia has great potential as a major player in the aluminum industry. However, further discussion is needed to map out cooperation projects.
"Indonesia is a potential country in the aluminum sector, therefore it is necessary to continue to conduct feasibility studies to measure the efficiency of Indonesian aluminum products," Abdulnasser said as quoted by Antara, on Sunday, February 16, 2025.
He also said that EGA uses solar panels as a power source for aluminum processing and plans to explore alternative clean energy development in Indonesia.
Airlangga said he would coordinate with INALUM to follow up on the previously agreed cooperation. He said that related stakeholders also need to be involved to accelerate the implementation of the cooperation commitment.
"Collaboration is needed with other parties such as PLN to develop low-carbon electricity to meet sufficient electricity supply for aluminum production," he said.
Airlangga emphasized that this cooperation must have a significant impact on the Indonesian economy and involve the private sector in Indonesia.
"It needs to be ensured that this aluminum sector cooperation has a big economic impact, especially in job creation," he said.
The Indonesian government has also encouraged the development of new renewable energy (EBT), the development of hydrocarbons, new technology fibers including hydrogen, nuclear and batteries.
"With the advanced capabilities and technology that we use, and the potential of natural resources that Indonesia has, it will produce the best alumina in large quantities," Abdulnasser said.
