The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has named party cadre and Minister of Social Affairs, Tri Rismaharini or Risma, to challenge former Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa in the November 27, 2024 East Java gubernatorial election.
"Tri Rismaharini is confirmed for East Java [gubernatorial election], In shaa Allah [God willing]," Said Abdullah, one of the deputies to PDI-P chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, said on Tuesday, August 27, 2024..
The nomination of Risma is considered a strategic move by PDI-P, given her strong track record and popularity in East Java, particularly in Surabaya. She served as Surabaya mayor for two terms from 2010 until 2020, while her current role as Minister of Social Affairs adds weight to her candidacy.
However, her challenge will be substantial as she faces Khofifah, who has a broad coalition of party support.
The outcome of this gubernatorial race could significantly influence the political landscape in East Java and impact the broader national political dynamics for the 2029 general elections.
However, PDI-P has yet to reveal who will be Risma’s running mate in the East Java election.
Said, who also serves as Chairman of the East Java chapter of PDI-P, cited that discussions regarding Risma's running mate are ongoing within the party, as well as with other political parties. One of the parties in talks is the National Awakening Party (PKB).
"Yes, we are in talks with PKB, religious scholars, and community leaders," he said.
On the other hand, Khofifah and her running mate Emil Dardak have secured support from several political parties, including the National Mandate Party (PAN), Golkar Party, Gerindra Party, Democratic Party, Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), United Development Party (PPP), Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Nasdem Party, and Perindo Party.
Khofifah-Emil are scheduled to register with the East Java Provincial Election Commission (KPUD) today (Wednesday, August 28, 2024). Meanwhile, Said has not yet confirmed when Risma will file her registration.
