Indonesia will hold the simultaneous general elections in 2024 and all eyes are on potential candidates for president and vice president posts. The General Elections Commission (KPU) has already released to the public on June 14, 2022, its scheduled stages for the elections.

The legislative and presidential elections will take place on February 14, 2024, while the regional elections will happen on November 27, 2024.

The election will be a massive political event and poses a serious challenge for the organizers. The KPU said in July 2022 that around 190 million eligible voters would cast their votes. However, the Ministry of Home Affairs estimated in early December 2022 that the number of eligible voters would be around 204.6 million.

The elections will vote for:

  • 732 seats in the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), consisting of
    • 580 seats in the House of Representatives (DPR)
    • 152 seats in the Regional Representatives Council (DPD)
  • President and Vice President
  • Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD I)
  • Regional Legislative Council (DPRD II in mayoralty or regental level)
  • 4 governors
  • 76 regents
  • 18 mayors

Stages leading up to elections

  • Planning and registration

The planning and registration process for the participants in the electoral process kicked off on October 14, 2022, and will end on November 25, 2023. This includes the nomination of candidates for DPR, DPD, provincial and regional DPRDs as well as candidates for president/vice president, governors, mayors and regents.

  • Election campaign

Political campaign will begin from November 28, 2023 to February 10, 2024. The total campaign period will be 75 days, compared to the previous election in 2019 which was 90 days.

  • Election results and confirmation

Voting days will take place on February 14 and 15, 2024, followed by quick count in the same day. From February 15, 2024 to March 20, 2024, the KPU will hold recapitulation of vote count results.

Confirmation of the results is set at the latest 3 days after notice from the Constitutional Court (MK) if there is no dispute and 3 days at the latest after the MK’s verdict if there is a dispute.

Elected candidates for the DPR and DPD will be sworn in on October 1, 2024. Meanwhile, the President and Vice President elect will be sworn in on October 20, 2024.

Where are we now?

The KPU announced on December 15, 2022, that 17 political parties have met the requirements to pass the factual verification stage and they could become participants in the elections. The KPU also declared that 6 local parties in Aceh province are eligible to participate in the regional elections.

All eligible political parties have received their ballot paper numbers, which will be useful for them during the campaigns.
