Son of a cabinet minister secures deputy MPR speakership post

Youth empowerment takes center stage with Abcandra Muhammad Akbar Supratman, the son of Minister of Law and Human Rights and Gerindra Party politician, Supratman Andi Agtas, being elected as Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR).

Born in 1998, Abcandra is the youngest ever an elected member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) to be seated in the deputy MPR speakership post.

“An honor for all youth in Indonesia, that cross-generational collaboration is real,” he said, on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

Abcandra hopes that the MPR can become a home for cross-generational collaboration. He targets to focus on the youth sector. Abcandra admitted that he is active in various organizations both at the university level.

“I am an alumni of the Trisakti University, then active in the KMPI (Indonesian Muslim Entrepreneurs Community), the HMI (Islamic Student Association), and several other youth organizations,” he said.

In addition to Abcandra, it was agreed that seven Deputy Speakers of the MPR consisting of seven factions, chaired by the Secretary General of the Gerindra Party, Ahmad Muzani.

Other Deputy Speakers of the MPR are Bambang Wuryanto from PDI-P (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle), Kahar Muzakir from Golkar (Functional Group), Lestari Moerdijat from NasDem (National Democrat), Rusdi Kirana from PKB (National Awakening Party), Muhammad Hidayat Nur Wahid from PKS (Prosperous Justice Party), Eddy Soeparno from PAN (National Mandate Party), and Edhy Baskoro Yudhoyono from Democrat Party.
