Masdar, a United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based clean energy company, has the ambition to make PT Geothermal Energy (PGE), a geothermal energy subsidiary of State energy company PT Pertamina, an international market player for energy utilization.

Masdar had invested and held 15 percent of PGE’s shares, making PGE its first destination for investment in the geothermal sector.

“We are working with our partners to see how we can leverage our experience to take Pertamina from a local player in geothermal energy utilization to an international player,” Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Masdar Chief Operating Officer (COO), said as quoted by Antara, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Masdar seeks to bridge Pertamina with a number of African countries that have geothermal energy potential.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the Indonesian government is making the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) an event to explore the expansion of geothermal utilization owned by Africa.

Dadan Kusdiana, Secretary General of the ESDM Ministry, said there is a potential of 10 thousand megawatts (MW) in Kenya. Exploration of geothermal energy sources in Kenya will be carried out in late 2024 or at the latest early 2025.

The geothermal field exploration was carried out in collaboration between PGE, Africa Geothermal International Ltd (AGIL) and Geothermal Development Company (GDC) for the development of the Suswa Block in Longonot, Kenya.
