Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy D. Soeparno has joined the chorus in revealing the importance of accelerating the governance of Carbon Economic Value (NEK) in order to utilize Indonesia’s great potential in carbon trading.
“Carbon trading will be a pillar of Indonesia’s economy in the future. With a carbon storage potential of 600 gigatons, Indonesia must not lag behind other countries, such as Singapore, China, Korea, and Japan,” Eddy said while attending the first anniversary of the Indonesian Carbon Emission Experts Association (ACEXI) at the Indonesian Library in Jakarta on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
He cited the regulatory constraints that often hinder the development of carbon trading. As a member of the energy, environment, and investment Commission XII of the House of Representatives (DPR), Eddy is committed to helping pave the way through communication with relevant officials.
ACEXI Chairman, Lastyo K. Lukito, emphasized the importance of ACEXI’s support in creating quality NEK governance.
“Good NEK governance will create new opportunities in the carbon trading sector, encourage sustainable economic growth, and create jobs,” Lastyo said.
He added that with the launch of the carbon exchange on IDX as an initial milestone, ACEXI is optimistic that good NEK governance will support the national target of reducing carbon emissions.
Established in 2023, ACEXI aims to be a forum for practitioners and academics in supporting climate change control in Indonesia. Its programs include training, certification, advocacy, and strategic partnerships with various parties to accelerate the implementation of NEK.
The anniversary event was attended by stakeholders from the government, academics, development partners, and civil society. Lastyo hopes that this momentum can strengthen Indonesia’s contribution to climate change control and realize sustainable low-carbon economic development.
