During its initial opening, IDR 29.2 billion was record in carbon trading value with a total volume of 459.95 tCO2. There were a total of 27 transactions involving 15 buyers and one seller.

These transactions occurred in various segments of the market: 17 in the regular market, 3 in the negotiation market, and 2 in the auction market. There were 16 users of the market at that time. Meanwhile, the opening price in the regular market was IDR 69,600, and the closing price was IDR 77,000.

According to the official IDX Carbon website, the only change observed was the increase in the number of users from 16 to 17, with the identity of the new user yet to be announced by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI), the market operator.

In the closing report for Tuesday, October 3, 2023, there were no changes observed, and there did not appear to be any additional transactions.

Carbon trading not yet liquid as stock market

BEI Director of Development, Jeffrey Hendrik, had previously mentioned that there is a process underway to onboard several new users, both sellers and buyers. Additionally, Jeffrey acknowledged that, at present, the carbon market transactions are not as liquid as the stock market.

"We are still conducting outreach and meetings with potential companies. It is hoped that in the future, there will be sufficient demand and supply to make the carbon market more liquid," he told reporters on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

Furthermore, Mahendra Siregar, Chairman of the OJK Board of Commissioners, had previously stated that 99 coal-fired power plants (PLTUs), equivalent to 86% of the PLTUs operating in Indonesia, have the potential to engage in carbon market transactions.
