Domestic resources sufficient to handle Sumatra disaster response: Government
The government has stated that it does not yet require international assistance in handling the severe floods and landslides affecting Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi cited that current efforts are focused on maximizing national resources before considering foreign support.
He acknowledged that several countries have offered aid, expressing condolences and readiness to help. However, the government believes Indonesia still has the capacity to manage the disaster response independently.
“For now, not yet. The Government of Indonesia is grateful for the concern and offers of assistance from many friendly nations,” Prasetyo said at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in East Jakarta on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
He added that food supplies remain secure, as domestic stocks are currently sufficient. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure the distribution of fuel to all affected regions.
“We continue coordinating with [State energy company] Pertamina to secure fuel supply and distribute it to all impacted areas ‒ using unconventional methods if necessary,” he said.
A similar message was conveyed by Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, who emphasized that Indonesia still possesses the necessary strength and capability to address the crisis.
“We still have the strength, we still have the strength,” Tito reiterated, on Wednesday.
According to preliminary data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the floods and landslides have claimed 753 lives across the three provinces: 220 in Aceh, 234 in West Sumatra, and 299 in North Sumatra. Additionally, around 650 people remain missing and 2,600 have been injured.
Overall, the disasters have impacted approximately 3.3 million residents in 49 districts and cities across the affected regions.
