Indonesia’s consulate in Hong Kong reported on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, that the number of Indonesian nationals confirmed safe after the massive fire at Wang Fuk Court apartment has risen to 108, while the death toll among Indonesians remains at nine.

According to the latest update from the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Hong Kong, approximately 140 Indonesians were estimated to be living in the apartment complex at the time of the blaze. Of those, nine were confirmed dead, one remains hospitalized, 108 have been accounted for, and 22 are still unlocated.

“The number of Indonesians residing in the complex is estimated at 140 people, with nine fatalities, one hospitalized, 108 confirmed safe, and 22 yet to be found,” the consulate said in its press briefing.

Hong Kong authorities are continuing search-and-rescue operations amid charred debris and structurally weakened sections of the building. Officials have cautioned that the overall death count already at 151 may increase as teams comb through the ruins of what is now considered the city’s deadliest fire in decades.

The scale of devastation has prompted Hong Kong’s government to form an independent inquiry committee, led by a senior judge, to determine the cause of the fire and examine factors that accelerated the spread of the flames.

The investigation will also scrutinize alleged oversight failures involving building renovations that residents and local media have partly blamed for the rapid engulfment of the tower.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry said it is working closely with Hong Kong officials to ensure the identification and repatriation process for deceased Indonesian citizens proceeds smoothly.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yvonne Mewengkang said the consulate has established a Family Engagement Team, tasked with assisting relatives of victims in Indonesia.

“The team is responsible for ensuring all information needs and questions from the families are properly addressed,” she said, adding that the Indonesian Consulate in Hong Kong is maintaining intensive communication with the victims’ families.

Meanwhile, consular officials said they remain on standby to provide logistical support, including hospital coordination, documentation, and repatriation arrangements once the identification process is completed.

The fire, which broke out late last week, has triggered widespread public scrutiny of Hong Kong’s building safety standards and the living conditions of migrant workers, many of whom reside in high-density apartment blocks su,ch as Wang Fuk Court.
