Indonesian Central Bank (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo has expressed confidence that the Indonesian rupiah will strengthen next year, targeting an average exchange rate of Rp16,500 per US dollar, potentially even reaching Rp16,400 per US dollar.

“God willing, we will guide the exchange rate to average around Rp16,500 per US dollar, and even Rp16,400 per US dollar next year. We will continue to maintain currency stability,” Perry said during the opening of Bank Indonesia’s community talk show BIRAMA 2025: Synergy to Drive Growth and Economic Resilience in Jakarta on Monday, December 1, 2025.

Perry also voiced optimism for Indonesia’s economy in 2026, projecting growth of 5.3 percent–5.4 percent with inflation kept under control at around 2.5 percent.

“We should be grateful ‒ compared to other countries, Indonesia is performing better. China is expected to grow only 4.6 percent, Europe 1.7 percent, while India is slowing down, although still above us,” he noted.

He emphasized that accelerating domestic consumption and investment would be key to achieving next year’s economic targets. “Of course, exports must also be encouraged ‒ everything must move together,” he added.

Data from BI’s Annual Meeting speech materials show that as of November 18, 2025, the rupiah stood at Rp16,735 per US dollar, weakening 4.01 percent from the end of December 2024. However, the average exchange rate throughout 2025 remained relatively firm at Rp16,430 per US dollar.

The central bank cited that the rupiah’s performance remains more stable compared to many emerging market currencies and is even stronger than most advanced economies’ currencies aside from the US dollar. Beyond consistent monetary policy efforts, rupiah stability has also benefited from increased foreign exchange conversion by exporters ‒ a result of strengthened policies governing export proceeds in the natural resources sector.
