Indonesia’s state-owned energy company PT Pertamina has set up partnership with China’s Daqing Oilfield Co., Ltd. to implement chemical injection technology under the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) method a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

EOR is a method designed to boost oil production from mature reservoirs by injecting specific substances into the rock layers containing hydrocarbons.

Pertamina’s Senior Vice President of Technology Innovation & Implementation, Hana Timoti, said that chemical EOR is one of the company’s key efforts to enhance production from aging oil fields. The first injection trial is expected to begin this year in Pertamina Hulu Rokan, one of the country’s largest oil blocks.

“Most of Pertamina’s wells are already mature, so they require special injections to increase output. Daqing Oilfield has a strong track record and expertise in chemical EOR,” Hana said as quoted in a statement on Friday, October 17, 2025.

The MoU, signed by Hana Timoti and Fang Jungling, Vice President of Daqing Oilfield Co., Ltd., CNPC, will be effective for five years. Hana noted that EOR development requires time to achieve targeted results but expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential.

“We hope this partnership will yield optimal outcomes and contribute to Pertamina’s oil production increase,” she said.

Meanwhile, Fang Jungling highlighted Daqing Oilfield’s extensive experience of over 60 years in oil exploration and development, as well as its portfolio of proprietary technologies.

“We believe Daqing’s technology aligns perfectly with Indonesia’s oil development needs. Through this cooperation, we hope to synergize with Pertamina to help achieve the national production target of 1 million barrels per day by 2030,” Fang said.

The partnership underscores Pertamina’s commitment to innovation and international collaboration as part of its long-term strategy to revitalize Indonesia’s aging oil fields and support national energy security.
