Agriculture Minister targets food self-sufficiency within three months
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that Indonesia is on track to achieve food self-sufficiency within the next two to three months, fulfilling a key target set by President Prabowo Subianto.
Speaking at a press conference at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, October 9, 2025, Amran said the government had accelerated its original timeline significantly following rapid improvements in domestic agricultural production.
“When I was appointed Minister, the target was to achieve food self-sufficiency in four years. After 21 days, it changed slightly to three years. After 45 days, it was revised again − from three years to one year,” Amran said on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
He expressed optimism that Indonesia would soon stop importing staple foods, particularly rice, provided there were no disruptions caused by extreme weather.
“God willing, within the next two to three months, Indonesia will no longer need to import. If we’re spared from extreme climate conditions, we will achieve self-sufficiency,” he said.
Amran reported that Indonesia’s rice production this year has reached 33.1 million tons, based on data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS). By the end of the year, production is expected to rise to 34 million tons, compared with 30 million tons recorded last year.
“According to BPS data, our production has reached 33.1 million tons so far. From January to December, it is projected to reach 34 million tons. Compared to last year’s 30 million tons, that’s a significant increase. In fact, this month rice prices recorded a deflation of -0.13 percent,” Amran noted.
