Former Bureaucratic Reform Minister questioned in Rp9.7 T Chromebook graft case
The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has questioned Abdullah Azwar Anas, Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (2022–2024), as a witness in the ongoing corruption investigation into the procurement of Chromebook laptops at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek).
Anas, a politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), was summoned on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, in his capacity as head of the National Public Procurement Agency (LKPP) in 2022.
“It is true that he [Anas] was questioned yesterday as a witness regarding his position as LKPP chief in 2022 in connection with the Chromebook case,” AGO spokesman Anang Supriatna said on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
Anang declined to elaborate on the substance of the interrogation, citing the investigation is underway.
The AGO has named five suspects in the case, including former Education Minister Nadiem Makarim, his special staff Jurist Tan, consultant Ibrahim Arief, Director of Junior High Schools Mulatsyah, and Director of Primary Schools Sri Wahyuningsih.
Prosecutors allege the project, valued at Rp9.7 trillion (US$580 million), caused Rp1.9 trillion in State losses. The procurement took place during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of an effort to provide students with digital learning devices.
Investigators said Nadiem played a central role, allegedly instructing ministry officials and staff to adopt laptops with ChromeOS despite internal technical studies that had deemed the devices unsuitable for the program’s objectives.
Prosecutors also highlighted meetings between Nadiem, other suspects, and representatives of Google Indonesia as part of the case construction.
Nadiem Makarim, referred to in AGO documents as “NAM,” has been detained for 20 days starting September 4, 2025, at Salemba Prison in Central Jakarta.
Director of Investigation at the Office of Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes, Nurcahyo Jungkung, said that the AGO has examined 120 witnesses and four experts to determine Nadiem as a suspect. The detention can be extended if deemed necessary by investigators.
