Indonesia sets the stage as a global leader in energy transition with ICMMS 2025
Indonesia takes a bold step forward in global energy transition as the Ministry of Investment and Downstream Industry, in partnership with Fastmarkets, is hosting the 2025 International Critical Minerals and Metals Summit (ICMMS).
The three-day event in Bali, which concluded today, September 26, 2025, gathers global stakeholders to explore the challenges and opportunities within the critical minerals sector.
In his keynote address on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Vice Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry, Todotua Pasaribu, outlined Indonesia’s strategic approach to cementing its role as a global leader in the energy transition through the sustainable and innovative management of critical minerals.
"Indonesia is not just a participant but a key player in the global energy transition, leveraging its wealth of minerals like nickel, bauxite, gold, tin, and copper. The decisions made by investors, born from collaboration, will unlock the enormous potential of Indonesia’s critical mineral resources. This will transform and strengthen the global supply chain while ensuring sustainability, economic resilience, and creating opportunities for generations to come," Pasaribu said as quoted in a statement on Friday, September 26, 2025.
Investment realization in the downstream sector hit Rp280.8 trillion (US$18.3 billion) in the first half of 2025, a staggering 54.8 percent increase from the previous year. The mineral sector led the charge, with Rp193.8 trillion (US$12.7 billion) invested, particularly in commodities like nickel, copper, and bauxite. Downstreaming has proven to be essential in driving Indonesia’s economic growth, supporting the national energy transition with key strategies including the development of electric vehicles, batteries, and solar panels.
"Together, we can build a future of shared prosperity. I am confident today’s discussions will not only strengthen commercial ties but also inspire new partnerships that will contribute to the collective economic well-being in the years ahead," Pasaribu said.
In addition to the Main Summit, the Government Summit was held, offering an exclusive platform for representatives from partner countries, strategic investors, and industry leaders. Deputy for Investment Promotion, Nurul Ichwan, delivered a speech focusing on the challenges and opportunities in mineral downstreaming and enhancing sustainable supply chains.
Fireside chat
A standout feature of the ICMMS 2025 Main Summit was the Fireside Chat session, where Deputy Nurul Ichwan joined Karim Dahou, Deputy Director of the Global Relations and Cooperation Directorate at the Organzation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), to discuss the role of policy and international cooperation in strengthening supply chains and driving sustainable growth.
ICMMS 2025 serves as a critical moment for Indonesia to demonstrate its leadership in the critical minerals industry and the global energy transition. With over 450 global stakeholders from 30 countries, including government officials, industry leaders, and experts from the private sector, the summit solidifies Indonesia's role as a forward-thinking, sustainable, and innovative partner on the global stage.
