Italian multinational Prysmian Group, a global leader in energy and telecom cable systems, is strengthening its renewable energy (RE) strategy across Southeast Asia to cut emissions and boost operational efficiency.

According to Ardian Wirawan, Regional Marketing Manager OSEA at Prysmian, the initiative is part of the company’s long-standing commitment to sustainability. Prysmian has already implemented solar power projects at its factories in Malaysia and Thailand.

In Malaysia, solar panels installed across the entire factory roof generate around 1,500 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually. However, local regulations limit renewable energy use to 30 percent of total demand.

“In Malaysia, even though we’re capped at 30 percent, we are utilizing the maximum permitted,” Ardian told Katadata.co.id on Monday, September 22, 2025.

In Thailand, Prysmian recently signed a contract for a solar panel project with a capacity expected to match − or even exceed − the scale of the Malaysia installation.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, Prysmian’s factory in Cikampek faces regulatory hurdles in adopting solar power. Current rules restrict renewable energy usage to just 10 percent of total demand, with an additional requirement to use designated local partners.

“We have wanted to install solar panels in Indonesia for the past two years, but the regulations have held us back. We don’t have much control,” Ardian cited.

The Cikampek plant, spanning 8 hectares, has an annual production capacity of 23,000 tons of cables, making it the largest in Southeast Asia. The facility employs around 200 workers and specializes in large-scale cables, including high-voltage KRN cables.

With progress in Malaysia and Thailand and regulatory discussions ongoing in Indonesia, Prysmian reaffirmed its commitment to advancing renewable energy adoption in the region.

Ardian said the company remains optimistic that these efforts will not only improve energy efficiency but also reinforce its leadership in the global cable market.
