Akamai strengthens commitment to Indonesia’s digital transformation
U.S.-based cybersecurity and cloud company Akamai Technologies has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s digital transformation through a range of solutions, particularly in cybersecurity, as cyberattacks increasingly threaten rapid adoption of business digitization.
As stipulated in Akamai’s latest report, “Security as a Business Priority for the Digital Generation in Asia to Achieve Sustainable Growth,” Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to grow much faster than its GDP. Between 2023 and 2025, the country’s digital economy is expected to post a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 percent, compared with nominal GDP growth of 9 percent.
Akamai noted that Indonesia’s fast-paced digital adoption is marked by a vibrant startup ecosystem and strong government initiatives such as Making Indonesia 4.0. However, the company warned that this growth comes with escalating cybersecurity risks, especially due to cloud adoption and heavy reliance on APIs.
Key cyber threats in Indonesia
Akamai identified four major areas of vulnerability in Indonesia:
1. Application and API vulnerabilities – With many businesses built on cloud-based infrastructure and API-driven platforms, interfaces remain prime targets;
2. Data breaches and ransomware – Indonesia is highly exposed to identity theft and data leaks, particularly in the financial sector;
3. Malicious bots – These often target the media and e-commerce industries;
4. Complex IT infrastructure – Rapid adoption of multi-cloud and hybrid environments without integrated security can lead to fragmented, difficult-to-secure systems.
The company emphasized that as Indonesia’s digital economy grows, so do valuable data volumes and entry points for cybercriminals, making the country a high-value target for hackers.
Security and cloud solutions
To address these risks, Akamai offers a defense-in-depth approach, providing multiple layers of protection against evolving threats. Its solutions include:
1. Web, application, and Application Programming Interface (API) protection with
automated updates and tuning features.
2. Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) mitigation to counter large-scale
cyberattacks.
3. Bot management tools to protect online platforms.
4. Cloud computing with edge-first architecture, reducing latency by bringing
computing power closer to users − especially crucial in a vast archipelago like
Indonesia.
Akamai also supports content delivery through its CDN services such as Adaptive Media Delivery (AMD) and Ion, which reduce network latency and ensure high-quality content streaming.
Local impact and partnerships
Several major Indonesian platforms already rely on Akamai’s technology:
1. Vidio, a leading streaming service, uses Akamai’s CDN to handle surges in traffic
during major sports events;
2. Alodokter, a telemedicine app with 40 million users, leverages Akamai solutions to
expand healthcare access nationwide.
In the financial sector, Akamai works with local partners to deliver cybersecurity infrastructure that complies with Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPA) and safeguards sensitive customer data.
To further strengthen its presence, Akamai announced in 2023 the launch of a new core compute region in Jakarta, serving as a key hub in its global cloud network. The expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance performance, reduce latency, and provide localized services for Indonesia’s rapidly growing digital economy.
