Mineral and Coal directorate highlights growth, safety challenges in mining sector
Director General of Mineral and Coal (Minerba), Tri Winarno, recently provided a critical update during a hearing with the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) regarding the operational status and production figures of key players in the mining sector, including PT Perintu Eka Tamah and PT Insani Barangkasa.
In his statement, Winarno highlighted significant production achievements and addressed ongoing concerns related to workplace safety after several fatal accidents at mining sites.
He cited that PT Perintu Eka Tamah achieved a total production of 7 million tons of coal in 2023, with an expected increase to 8.5 million tons by 2024. The company has also made notable progress in exports, reaching 5.2 million tons in 2023, while domestic consumption accounted for 2.8 million tons.
However, Winarno also emphasized an issue that continues to concern the industry: workplace safety. During his hearing, he revealed a tragic accident involving an operator who was killed at a loading point while distributing material.
"We deeply regret the loss of life in this incident," Winarno said on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. "An investigation is ongoing, and PT Perintu Eka Tamah is fully cooperating with authorities to ensure that such accidents do not recur."
Reclamation and environmental commitments
Regarding reclamation efforts, Winarno shared that PT Perintu Eka Tamah has rehabilitated around 729 hectares of land affected by mining activities. The company has set aside a reclamation guarantee of 76.2 billion IDR, which is expected to cover reclamation efforts until 2025.
"We are determined to ensure that the environmental impact of mining is minimized, and our reclamation efforts are in line with regulatory requirements," Winarno noted during the hearing.
Winarno also addressed the performance of PT Insani Barangkasa, which is on track to reach 5.3 million tons of production in 2023. Exports have also contributed to the company's success, with a recorded export volume of 3.6 million tons in 2023.
However, the company has faced safety challenges, following two separate accidents that resulted in fatalities. "We are investigating these accidents thoroughly and are working with the Mining Inspectorate to implement corrective measures," he said.
Next steps
Winarno further stressed the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in the mining sector. "The government is actively monitoring compliance with safety standards across all mining operations. We expect companies to adhere to the recommendations made by the Mining Inspectorate to prevent future accidents," Winarno said.
