Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati has broken her silence following the looting of her residence in Bintaro, South Jakarta, by a group of unidentified individuals on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

In a statement shared on Instagram on Monday, September 1, 2025 Sri Mulyani − affectionately known as Ani − expressed gratitude for the sympathy, prayers, wise words, and moral support she has received.

“Thank you for the sympathy, prayers, kind words, and moral support from all parties in facing this incident,” she wrote.

Ani acknowledged that such risks come with her role as a state official, noting that not everyone agrees with government policies.

“I understand that building Indonesia is not an easy task. It is a difficult and often dangerous struggle, as our predecessors also experienced. Politics is a collective struggle for the nation’s greater good, carried out with ethics and morality. As a state official, I am sworn to uphold the 1945 Constitution and all laws − this is not about personal preference,” she said.

She emphasized that Indonesia’s laws are drafted with the involvement of the Government, the House of Representatives (DPR), the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and public participation in a transparent process. For those dissatisfied with policies, judicial review at the Constitutional Court remains the proper path.

“If the implementation of laws deviates, cases can be brought to court, even to the Supreme Court. That is Indonesia’s civilized democracy. It may not be perfect, but our duty is to continuously improve the quality of democracy − through civility, not anarchy, intimidation, or repression,” Ani stressed.

The finance minister vowed to continue carrying out her duties with integrity, professionalism, transparency, accountability, and without corruption.

She added that all criticism, even insults from the public, would serve as input for self-improvement, particularly for the Finance Ministry in shaping policies.

“Thank you to the public − including netizens, teachers, lecturers, students, media, MSMEs, cooperatives, big businesses, and all stakeholders − who continuously give input, criticism, satire, even harsh words, as well as advice, prayers, and encouragement for us to keep improving. This is part of the process of building Indonesia,” she said.

Ani concluded her statement with a call for unity, urging Indonesians to voice aspirations peacefully without resorting to looting, arson, or violence.

“Let us guard and build Indonesia together, not by destroying, looting, slandering, dividing, spreading hatred, arrogance, or hurting the public. We apologize for all shortcomings, and with God’s will, we will continue to improve,” she said.
