Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin arrived in Canberra, Australia on Wednesday August 27, 2025 to attend the Ninth Australia–Indonesia Foreign and Defense Ministers’ 2+2 Meeting, scheduled for  Thursday, August 28, 2025.

“The Indonesian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Sugiono, while Australian delegation will be led by Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, August 27, 025.

This ninth edition of the 2+2 Meeting will focus on strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in defense and maritime sectors, as well as geostrategic discussions on the increasingly dynamic regional and global security landscape, including the issue of Palestine.

Both sides expect to reach agreements on several concrete cooperation programs as part of the meeting's deliverables.

The Indonesia–Australia 2+2 Meeting, first initiated in 2011, serves as a high-level forum between the Foreign and Defense Ministers of both nations, aimed at enhancing bilateral and regional security cooperation.

In addition to the 2+2 Meeting, the Indonesian Foreign and Defense Ministers will pay a courtesy call on Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Sugiono is also scheduled to hold a separate bilateral meeting with Penny Wong to further discuss strengthening Indonesia–Australia relations, including cooperation in trade, economy, and investment.
