Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita inspected the AION V, a locally assembled electric vehicle, at the GAC Indonesia booth during the 2025 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) held at ICE BSD City on July 24, 2025.

The minister’s visit reflects the government’s commitment to boosting domestic electric vehicle (EV) industry. GAC Indonesia has demonstrated its long-term investment strategy by establishing a dedicated EV plant in Cikampek, West Java, focusing on both the domestic and export markets.

Currently, the plant has an initial production capacity of 20,000 units annually, with plans to expand to 50,000 units in the coming years.

At GIIAS 2025, GAC Indonesia showcased a lineup that includes the AION UT, AION V, AION Y Plus, Hyptech HT, and GAC E9 PHEV. To give the public first-hand experience, GAC Indonesia provided 10 electric vehicles for test drives throughout the exhibition, allowing attendees to experience the AION EVs.

"AION is a reflection of our commitment to accelerating the development of the EV ecosystem in Indonesia," Andry Ciu, CEO of GAC Indonesia, said.

"With advanced technology, premium design, and high energy efficiency, AION is designed as a smart solution for dynamic urban lifestyles, catering to both young professionals and modern families," he added.

GAC Indonesia has also expanded its dealer network to 40 locations nationwide, with a target of reaching 50 by the end of 2025. This expansion underscores the company’s readiness to deliver EVs that are not only advanced and efficient but also widely accessible to Indonesian consumers.

Advanced technology

The AION UT is equipped with a Qualcomm SA8155P processor, a high-end chipset typically found in luxury vehicles, capable of handling up to 105,000 commands per second. This ensures fast, stable, and lag-free performance when running multiple applications.

A 14.6-inch high-resolution central screen − the largest in its class − paired with an 8.8-inch LCD display offers sharp and smooth visuals, supporting apps like Spotify and Wireless Apple CarPlay. Android Auto compatibility is also in the pipeline.

Navigation is powered by 3D HERE Map, providing realistic building views, real-time traffic updates, and accurate charging station locations. The Voice Over System, available in English and Thai, can be activated hands-free by simply saying, “Hello Baby.”

Through the AION App, users can remotely monitor their vehicle’s location, battery status, air conditioning, and lock system directly from their smartphones. The smart IBCM control system enables automatic unlocking when the driver approaches, seamless start when shifting gears, and auto shutdown when the car is left unattended.

Safety standards

The AION UT uses an LFP Magazine Battery cell-to-pack technology − already proven in over one million vehicles globally without fire incidents. It supports ultra-fast charging from 30 percent to 80 percent in just 24 minutes.

Its body structure consists of 71 percent high-strength steel and has achieved a 5-star C-NCAP rating. The vehicle has passed rigorous 720-degree crash tests, both horizontally and vertically.

Safety is reinforced with 2.1-meter side curtain airbags covering all seating rows, lasting up to six seconds when deployed. All variants also feature Level 2 Autonomous Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), ensuring a safe driving experience for both novice and experienced drivers.

The Bosch One Box braking system provides smoother, faster responses, complemented by AUTO HOLD, front and rear automatic braking, 360-degree cameras, and parking sensors. Additional features include automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and high-speed stability control.

Performance and efficiency

Designed by Stéphane Janin of GAC Advanced Design Center Europe, the AION UT is offered with pre-booking prices starting below Rp330 million (US$20,250) for the standard model and slightly above for the premium version.

Standard Variant: up to 400 km (NEDC) with a 44.1 kWh battery;

Premium Variant: up to 500 km (NEDC) with a 60 kWh battery.

With its long driving range, efficiency, and premium features, the AION UT positions itself as one of the strongest contenders in Indonesia’s fast-growing EV market.
