Six members of the separatist Free Papua Organization (OPM) were killed and two others were injured in a series of armed clashes against Indonesian military forces in a number of Papua Highlands and Central Papua regions ahead of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence on August 17, 2025.

The Indonesian Military (TNI) has intensified security operations in the regions to ensure a secure environment ahead and during the Independence Day festivities, especially given the rising threats posed by the OPM.

On August 8, 2025, an operation was conducted in Biak Village, Mewoluk District, Puncak Jaya Regency. A task force targeting the OPM network led by Tenggamati Enumbi conducted a sweep following a tip-off from the community. Enumbi, a wanted individual since 2014 for a violent theft incident at Kulirik Police Post, opened fire on approaching troops, leading to a firefight.

As gunfire erupted, three OPM members were killed, including Enumbi. The troops secured a range of evidence, including pistols, communication radios, ammunition, and a Morning Star flag, among other combat items.

Just days later, on August 11, 2025, another operation was held in Mamba Village, Sugapa District, Intan Jaya Regency, where TNI forces were engaged in armed clash with OPM’s Kodap VIII Kemabu group. The firefight resulted in the death of one OPM member, Dece Mujijau, and two others sustained injuries. Evidence recovered included 5.56mm ammunition, an Android cell phone, and an OPM necklace.

On the following day, August 12, 2025, in Eknemba Village, Sugapa District, the OPM attempted a retaliatory attack, but TNI forces thwarted the attempt. Two OPM members, Teleginus Maiseni and his aide Seprianus Maiseni, were killed in the firefight. Troops seized various items, including OPM rings, bracelets, and gloves.

These incidents highlight the ongoing efforts of the OPM to disrupt security, intimidate the population, and undermine governance in Papua. Their actions continue to pose a threat to public order and stability in the region.

Major General Lucky Avianto, Commander of the Habema Joint Military Operation in Papua, said that the operations conducted by the TNI were to ensure the safety and security of the Papuan people.

"These operations are to maintain stability and protect civilians from any groups attempting to disturb security and peace," Lucky said as quoted in a statement on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Outgoing TNI spokesman, Major General Kristomei Sianturi, emphasized that the TNI's actions were professional, measured, and in compliance with legal protocols.

"The success of these operations demonstrates TNI’s commitment to upholding the law, as stipulated in Law Number 3/2025 on the Indonesian Military. We will continue to take appropriate action against armed groups while prioritizing territorial and humanist approaches to building long-term stability in Papua," he added.
