The Supreme Court (MA) has granted the judicial review application of former Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Setya Novanto, a status allowing him to be released on parole from Sukamiskin Penitentiary in Bandung City, West Java.
"He is released on parole because the judicial review was granted, reducing the sentence from 15 years to 12.5 years," Kusnali, Head of the West Java Office of the Directorate General of Correctional Institution, said as quoted by Antara on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
He cited that the decision to release Setya Novanto was in accordance with regulations, as the convict has already served two-thirds of his 12.5-year sentence. However, Setya is still required to report to Sukamiskin Penitentiary due to his parole status.
Previously, the Supreme Court granted Setya’s petition in the electronic ID card (e-KTP) procurement corruption case, resulting in a sentence reduction to 12.5 years.
"Proven under Articles 3 and 18 of the Corruption Eradication Law in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code," reads an excerpt from the Supreme Court ruling No. 32 PK/Pid.Sus/2020.
Prior to the Supreme Court's ruling, Setya was sentenced to 15 years in prison and a fine of Rp500 million (US$31,000), with a subsidiary sentence of three months. This verdict was read by a judge at the Corruption Court on April 24, 2018.
However, this sentence is lower than the demand of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor, who had previously sought 16 years in prison plus a fine of Rp1 billion (US$62,000) or a subsidiary sentence of six months.
