As a follow-up to his June 2025 visit to Asap Kido Merah (AKM) field in Fakfak, West Papua, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized the importance of validating the construction progress of what will be a Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility.

The facility will later process gas from the AKM Field, operated by Genting Oil Kasuri. Construction is underway at the Wison New Energies shipyard in Nantong, China, and targeted for completion in the first quarter of 2027.

Later, the FLNG will then receive gas supplies from the AKM project, which is projected to produce 330 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) starting in 2027.

"This Floating LNG facility is expected to be completed in early 2027, and will begin production in West Papua several months later," Bahlil said on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

The Wison Nantong Yard is a shipyard facility that has been operating since 2006 in the Nantong High-Tech Industrial Zone, Jiangsu Province, approximately 135 kilometers (km) from Wison's headquarters in Shanghai.

This facility specializes in building floating structures such as Floating LNG hulls and Self-Supporting Prismatic Type B (SPB) tanks, and provides EPCIC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning) services.

With a production capacity of up to five units per year, Nantong Yard is capable of assembling FLNG, LNG carriers, and Floating Storage Regasification Power barges (FSRPs), as well as exporting large modules and tanks in bulk.

The FLNG project originated from an agreement signed in June 2024 between the Genting Group, through its subsidiary, PT Layar Nusantara Gas, and Wison New Energies.

The vessel currently under construction has a production capacity of up to 1.2 million metric tons of LNG per year. With an investment value of approximately US$963 million (Rp15.59 trillion), Bahlil cited that this facility will be the first of its kind in the world and the ninth FLNG facility in the world.
