House urges full probe into mysterious death of foreign ministry diplomat
Law, human rights, and security Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) asks the National Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of Arya Daru Pangayunan, a 39-year-old diplomat with the Foreign Ministry, whose passing has sparked widespread public speculation due to its unusual circumstances.
The call was led by Hinca Pandjaitan, a Commission III member of the Democratic Party faction. Hinca said the peculiar nature of Arya’s death including taped facial features and questions surrounding fingerprint identification demands scientific investigation to avoid misinformation and public distrust.
"This case has captured public attention and generated many interpretations. That’s why it is a real test of the police's investigative capacity. We urge investigators to use the full range of scientific tools at their disposal,” Hinca said on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
He emphasized the importance of clarity in disclosing details from the crime scene, which he said appeared "unusual," to dispel any unfounded theories about the cause or motive behind Arya’s death.
“Because of how unusual this case is, we urge law enforcement to fully disclose their findings to the public and handle this with the utmost investigative rigor,” he said.
Echoing Hinca’s concerns, Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad of the Gerindra Party faction said the legislature had been seeking regular updates from the police.
“Commission III members have requested progress reports from the police,” Dasco told reporters at the House complex on Monday, July 28, 2025.
In response, Jakarta Police’s Director of General Criminal Investigation, Senior Commissioner Wira Satya, said at a Tuesday press conference that investigators found no evidence of foul play in Arya’s death.
“Our investigation has not uncovered any criminal act in this case,” Wira said, citing more than a month of police work, including testimony from 24 witnesses ranging from family members and coworkers to boarding house staff. Expert consultations were also part of the probe.
Wira dismissed rumors suggesting the diplomat had been bound or gagged and said the door to Arya’s room was locked from the inside, with no signs of forced entry.
“All indicators in this case point to a death without the involvement of another party,” Wira said, referring to Arya by his initials, ADP.
Police also revealed that Arya had accessed psychological services multiple times since 2013, as seen from data tied to a phone he used between 2019 and 2022. However, the smartphone Arya used shortly before his death has not been located.
“The last known location of the phone was at Grand Indonesia mall, but since the device was turned off, it has been difficult to trace,” Wira said.
Despite the police’s findings, pressure remains on the authorities to provide comprehensive and transparent updates, with legislators and the public continuing to demand clarity over the untimely death of the career diplomat.
