Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is visiting Indonesia on Monday and Tuesday, July 28-29, 2025 for the 13th Annual Consultation between Malaysia and Indonesia.

During the visit, Anwar will meet President Prabowo Subianto to discuss efforts to strengthen strategic bilateral relations between the two neighboring nations.

According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the consultation represents the highest bilateral mechanism between the two countries, aimed at enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

“This round of consultations presents an important opportunity to deepen strategic relations,” the ministry said in a statement as quoted by Antara, on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

Key discussion areas will include trade, industry, food security, education, connectivity, defense, and security cooperation. Prabowo and Anwar are also expected to witness the exchange of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) related to border management, health, and information and communications technology.

As part of the visit, Anwar will also go to the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta at the invitation of Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, where he will deliver a speech representing Malaysia as the 2025 ASEAN Chair.

The Malaysian prime minister will be accompanied by several senior officials, including Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Zafrul Aziz, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

The visit comes a month after President Prabowo visited Malaysia for bilateral talks with Anwar. The two leaders discussed pressing issues including border disputes, regional developments, and support for Palestinian independence.

A key highlight was their agreement to accelerate technical negotiations on unresolved border areas, including the Ambalat Block, while exploring joint economic development schemes in disputed regions.

Previously, Prabowo and Anwar also met during a Halalbihalal gathering in Malaysia, where they exchanged views on the impact of new U.S. import tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump. They also emphasized the need for coordinated ASEAN humanitarian efforts to assist earthquake victims in Myanmar.

The upcoming consultation marks another milestone in deepening ties between two founding ASEAN member states, as both nations seek stronger economic, security, and humanitarian collaboration in an increasingly dynamic geopolitical environment.
