Indonesian Navy says no ties with former Marine now in Russian service
The Indonesian Navy has confirmed it no longer has any connection with former Marine officer Satria Arta Kumbara, who reportedly joined the Russian military and is now pleading to return to Indonesia.
Indonesian Navy spokesman, Commodore Tunggul, said that Satria's case falls under the jurisdiction of other agencies, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, especially regarding his citizenship status.
“The Navy no longer has any ties with him,” Tunggul said on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Satria was previously dismissed from military service following a military court ruling (April 6, 2023) that found him guilty of desertion starting from June 13, 2022. The court sentenced him to one year in prison and dishonorable discharge, with the ruling becoming final and binding on April 17, 2023.
Satria went viral in May 2025 after a video clip of him claiming he was being “persecuted” for joining a foreign military. He appeared in full Russian military gear, prompting online discussions due to his background as a former Indonesian Navy’s Marine Second Sergeant stationed at the Marine Corps’ First Infantry Brigade in Cilandak, South Jakarta.
The Navy reiterated that Satria had committed multiple violations while in service, which led to his dismissal and loss of military affiliation.
