Reports say 271 Indonesians arrested during online scam crackdown in Cambodia
In a major operation against cross-border cybercrime, Cambodian authorities have arrested 271 Indonesian nationals − including 45 women − in a building suspected to be a hub for online scams in Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey province as reported by Cambodian media khmertimeskh.com.
The joint raid, conducted by the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Unified Command and relevant law enforcement agencies, was held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at a three-story building on Stan Tangun Road, opposite the west road of Borey De Park City in Balilay 2 Village, Poipet Sangkat, Cambodia.
Authorities seized a total of 341 computers and 352 mobile phones believed to be linked to online fraud operations. The Indonesian nationals were found working inside the premises, raising serious concerns about their legal status and possible links to forced labor or human trafficking.
All those arrested have been taken to the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Police Headquarters for further investigation and legal proceedings. Cambodian authorities said they will take strict legal action against the masterminds behind the sophisticated online scam syndicate.
Spokesman of Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Rolliansyah Soemirat, told Indonesia Business Post on Monday, July 21, 2025 that the Indonesian government is closely coordinating with Cambodian authorities following the arrests of hundreds of Indonesian nationals during a nationwide crackdown on online scams conducted in Cambodia on July 15–16, 2025.
The sweeping operation, launched across nearly all provinces in Cambodia, was conducted under the directive of Prime Minister Hun Manet, who serves as Chairman of the Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS). The Prime Minister issued instructions on July 15, 2025 for central and provincial officials to intensify efforts in eradicating online fraud networks operating within the country.
The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has been actively engaging with Cambodian government agencies to verify the identities of the arrested individuals and to assess the full impact of the operation on Indonesian nationals.
"The Indonesian Government, through its Embassy in Phnom Penh, is in close communication and coordination with the Cambodian Government to obtain complete data and information regarding Indonesian nationals apprehended during the operation,” Rolliansyah said.
"The Embassy is also working to ensure consular assistance is provided and that legal procedures are respected in accordance with Cambodian law and international norms," he added.
The Indonesian Embassy is currently preparing to conduct official consular visits and provide legal and humanitarian support to all affected citizens, in line with Indonesia’s standard consular protocol.
