PT Vale Indonesia awaits 3rd partner for HPAL smelter project in Sorowako
Mining company PT Vale Indonesia (INCO) is still in the process of securing a third partner for its High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) smelter project in Sorowako, East Luwu, South Sulawesi.
Established in July 1968, PT Vale Indonesia, formerly known as PT International Nickel Indonesia, engages in nickel mining.
The smelter project is aimed at processing limonite nickel ore and is currently being developed in collaboration with Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co, the world’s largest nickel producer based in China.
“The search for a third partner is ongoing internally. We haven’t finalized who it will be,” Andaru Brahmono Adi, Head of Corporate Finance & Investor Relations at PT Vale Indonesia, said in Jakarta on Friday, July 18, 2025.
Then CEO of PT Vale Indonesia, Febriany Eddy, said that since August 2024 the company had been actively seeking a new partner with a strong international sustainability focus, a solid reputation, and a key role in battery storage industries.
He added that while several companies are on the potential partner list, no agreements have been signed yet and no names were disclosed.
Vale remains optimistic about securing the right partner and assures that the ongoing search will not disrupt the smelter project’s timeline.
“It shouldn’t cause delays, as we already have a technology partner. Even without a third partner, we’re able to start work,” Andaru said.
He cited that the third partner could contribute either strategically or financially to the project.
