N. Sumatra optimistic Toba Caldera Geopark to regain UNESCO “green card” status
The North Sumatra Provincial Administration is optimistic that the Toba Caldera Geopark will regain its “green card” status from UNESCO following an upcoming revalidation assessment scheduled for July 21–25, 2025.
“The recommendations have been fulfilled, only minor preparations remain. Let’s ensure no small details are overlooked,” North Sumatra Provincial Secretary, Togap Simangunsong, said in Medan on Thursday, July 17, 2025 as quoted by Antara.
The Toba Caldera UNESCO Global Geopark Management Agency (BP TCUGGp), established under Governor Regulation No. 48/2020, confirmed that most of UNESCO's recommendations have already been met. UNESCO assessor Soo Jae Lee conducted a preliminary assessment of several geosites across Lake Toba from July 11–13, 2025.
Togap emphasized the significance of UNESCO recognition, urging stakeholders and local communities to preserve Lake Toba for future generations. “UNESCO recognition is a source of pride. Once we secure the green card, we must maintain the lake’s cleanliness and sustainability.”
Lake Toba, or Toba Caldera, was officially designated a UNESCO Global Geopark during the 209th UNESCO Executive Board session in Paris on July 2, 2020.
BP TCUGGp General Manager, Azizul Kholis, said four key UNESCO recommendations − Geological heritage and its interpretation; Natural, cultural, and intangible heritage identification; Visibility and partnerships; and Networking and capacity-building efforts − have largely been addressed.
He noted that while preparations for the revalidation are ongoing, all stakeholders have been actively involved, giving confidence that Toba Caldera Geopark will meet the criteria.
Previously, during the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council meeting in Morocco in September 2023, Toba Caldera received a “yellow card” due to management shortfalls. UNESCO requested improvements before a revalidation review could take place two years later.
Other geoparks that received yellow cards included Zhijindong Cave in China, Luberon Regional Park in France, Madonie in Italy, and Colca and Volcanes de Andagua in Peru.
“We truly appreciate the collaborative efforts of all parties in preparing for this revalidation. We remain confident that Toba Caldera will receive the green card again,” Azizul said.
