The Ministry of Agriculture is set to ramp up broiler chicken production starting next month in anticipation of the full-scale rollout of 8,000 SPPG (Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi or Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units) kitchens in August 2025.

Agung Suganda, Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, said that the current annual chicken meat production is being maintained at 4.2 million tons, a level that exceeds national demand by about 340,000 tons per year.

He cited that the surplus volume can be effectively absorbed once 6,000 SPPG kitchens are operational. As of this month, only 2,000 kitchens are functioning.

“That’s why we will soon invite all poultry industry stakeholders to discuss strategies and prepare for the SPPG expansion,” Agung said as quoted on Monday, July 14, 2025.

In addition, Indonesia’s annual egg production stands at 6.5 million tons, with a surplus of 300,000 tons per year.

Despite production being regulated, Indonesia ranks as the world’s fourth-largest producer of chicken meat, following China, the United States, and Brazil, and is the third-largest producer of chicken eggs globally.

Agung emphasized that production levels are currently being managed to ensure that farmgate prices remain above production costs. The current cost of production (HPP) for chicken meat is Rp18,000 per kilogram, and Rp22,000 per kilogram for eggs.

One of the ministry’s contingency options is removing the production cap on day-old chickens (DOC).

“If we fully lift the DOC production limit, national distribution could reach 90 million chicks per week,” he said.

Agung stressed that any decision to increase DOC production will take into account the national supply-demand balance for chicken meat and eggs, while also aligning with export market needs.

“The government's priority is to ensure domestic availability of chicken and eggs, and that begins with strong, stable chick production,” he said.
