Prabowo pushes for sped up cooperation in agriculture, energy, defense with Brazil
President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, emphasized the importance of accelerating concrete cooperation between Indonesia and Brazil, particularly in the fields of agriculture, clean energy, and defense.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Planalto Palace, President Prabowo highlighted Brazil's exemplary leadership in biofuel development and agricultural innovation.
“Brazil offers an extraordinary model in the use of biofuels and innovation in the agricultural sector. Its productivity is remarkable, and we want to learn from that experience,” Prabowo said as quoted in a statement on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
In the area of energy transition, the Indonesian president announced that Brazil had warmly welcomed Indonesia’s plan to send more technical teams to study agricultural modernization and renewable energy technologies. He reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to achieving 100 percent renewable energy within the next decade.
“Our target is 2040, but my experts believe we can reach that goal much sooner. Once again, we look to Brazil’s success in biofuel development. We are determined to pursue the level of progress Brazil has made,” he added.
Prabowo also underscored the importance of food security and self-sufficiency for Indonesia, recognizing Brazil’s programs as an inspirational model to support food resilience and child nutrition.
“We are currently implementing an ambitious program to provide free nutritious meals to children and pregnant women in Indonesia, targeting 82.9 million portions per day by December 2025,” he said.
In addition, Prabowo noted that bilateral cooperation would be expanded through the involvement of Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, and the implementation of the Indonesia-Brazil Defense Cooperation Agreement.
“We aim to continue this partnership through joint production and joint technology transfer. We also intend to enhance military personnel training and collaborate on missile and submarine system technologies,” he said.
Peaceful solutions and global governance
On the same occasion, Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia's alignment with Brazil on key global geopolitical issues, including conflict resolution and reform of international governance systems.
“In today’s international geopolitical climate, we are fully aligned with President Lula’s views, and I hope we can continue coordinating a number of important initiatives that we must pursue together,” he said.
Addressing global conflicts, Prabowo expressed Indonesia’s strong support for Brazil’s approach in promoting peaceful conflict resolution. On the war in Ukraine, he welcomed Brazil’s proposal for a coalition of neutral countries to push for a real and sustainable ceasefire.
“With regard to the Middle East, once again we deeply appreciate your strong position on the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza. We also fully agree that the only viable solution is the two-state solution, and we value your clear stance on this matter,” he said.
He also voiced support for a broad reform agenda targeting the structure and decision-making mechanisms of the United Nations. He emphasized the importance of increasing representation for emerging major powers on the global stage.
“I believe we must play a more responsible and leading role, and we must combine our efforts and unite our voices to push forward this reform alongside other countries, such as India, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Germany, Japan, and Mexico,” Prabowo said.
