President Prabowo Subianto launched on Thursday, June 26, 2025 a series of renewable energy (EBT) power plant projects across 15 Indonesian provinces, representing a combined investment of Rp25 trillion (US$1.56 billion) and a major step toward the country's long-term goal of energy self-sufficiency.

Joining the event virtually, Prabowo described the inauguration as a strategic milestone, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening national energy security and accelerating the transition to clean energy.

“The inauguration of renewable energy operations across 15 provinces and the increase of 30,000 barrels of oil production at the Cepu block is a crucial moment. These projects, along with many others to follow, mark our efforts to achieve energy independence as a nation,” Prabowo said during the virtual ceremony from the PLTP Ijen geothermal plant in Bondowoso, East Java, on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia detailed the scope of the projects, saying the newly inaugurated EBT facilities have a total combined capacity of 379.7 megawatts (MW), predominantly from geothermal and solar energy installations.

“These projects span across 15 provinces, involving both geothermal and solar technologies, with a total investment of approximately Rp 25 trillion,” Bahlil said at the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP Ijen), operated by PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal.

According to ESDM Ministry data, the geothermal portion alone accounts for 351.9 MW with an investment value of Rp 23.49 trillion, including key projects like, PLTP Salak Binary in West Java (operated by PT Star Energy Geothermal Salak), PLTP Muara Laboh Unit 2 in West Sumatra (operated by PT Supreme Energy Muara Laboh)

Additionally, 47 solar power (PLTS) projects totaling 27.8 MW were also inaugurated across 11 provinces primarily targeting off-grid villages.

“There are around 5,600 rural villages and hamlets still lacking electricity. In line with the President’s directives, we are implementing PLTS systems in these areas to ensure universal access within the next 5–10 years,” Bahlil cited.

The PLTP Ijen, the first geothermal plant in East Java, stands as a flagship of Indonesia’s clean energy transition. The plant, with a total planned capacity of 110 MW, currently supplies electricity for 85,000 households across the Java-Bali grid and is expected to prevent 7 million tons of CO₂ emissions over its operational lifetime (Unit 1).

Spanning 117 hectares, PLTP Ijen exemplifies the integration of green infrastructure and national development goals reinforcing the government’s push to meet its Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target by 2060.

In a related development, President Prabowo also inaugurated a 30,000-barrel per day (bpd) increase in oil production from the Banyu Urip field in Blok Cepu, Bojonegoro, Central Java operated by ExxonMobil Cepu Ltd.
