President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Bali on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, marking a historic step in Indonesia’s healthcare transformation.

The Sanur SEZ is the country’s first health-focused special economic zone, offering an integrated ecosystem of world-class medical services and wellness tourism. At the heart of this new zone is Bali International Hospital, supported by premium accommodations including The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel. Designed to blend cutting-edge medical technology with holistic recovery rooted in Balinese culture, the zone aims to position Sanur as a premier international destination for health tourism.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir emphasized that Sanur SEZ reflects the Ministry’s shift toward becoming a mission-driven regulator, as mandated by the newly passed Law No. 1/2025 on SOEs.

“President Prabowo always reminds us that we are a great nation − one that must stand on its own feet. But the reality is that around 2 million Indonesians seek medical treatment abroad every year, draining nearly Rp150 trillion (US$9.7 billion) in foreign exchange. This is a major challenge that we must address systemically, and Sanur SEZ is part of that answer,” Erick said.

He further noted that the SEZ embodies the SOE Ministry's strategy to transform strategic sectors and generate long-term public value. By bridging healthcare and tourism, the zone is expected to become a new driver of economic growth and national resilience.

The development of Sanur SEZ involved strong inter-ministerial coordination: Coordinating Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono accelerated licensing, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin facilitated medical accreditation, and Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana strengthened the health tourism component.

Zone operations are led by Danantara, a state-owned strategic entity managed by CEO Rosan Roeslani and COO Dony Oskaria, tasked with ensuring professional governance and long-term sustainability.

The presence of The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel enhances the patient and visitor experience, with a wellness-focused environment aligned with Balinese cultural values.

“With this kind of collaboration, we can expand our reach and reinforce the resilience of Indonesia’s healthcare system. More than that, Indonesia has the potential to emerge as a global player in the healthcare service industry,” Erick concluded.
