Indonesia evacuates 54 citizens from Middle Eastern conflict zones
A total of 54 Indonesian citizens and one foreign national were evacuated from multiple conflict-affected regions in the Middle East and are scheduled to arrive in Jakarta today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.
Forty-nine evacuees, including 48 Indonesian citizens and one foreign national, are arriving on three separate commercial flights originating from Baku, Azerbaijan. The flights transited through Istanbul and Doha before heading to Jakarta.
In addition to the Azerbaijan group, the Indonesian government has also facilitated the evacuation of five more Indonesian nationals from high-risk areas. Three Indonesians were successfully evacuated from northern Yemen − a region currently under Houthi control − through coordinated efforts by the Indonesian Embassy in Muscat.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Amman, Jordan, helped evacuate two citizens who had been residing in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
“These evacuations demonstrate the government's firm commitment to protecting Indonesian citizens wherever they are,” Judha Nugraha, Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
He added, “Our embassies in Muscat and Amman had already declared a Level 1 Alert for northern Yemen and the territories of Israel and Palestine. Today’s successful evacuations are the result of intensive coordination under these emergency protocols.”
The ministry reaffirmed its readiness to continue monitoring developments in conflict zones and take further protective measures as needed to ensure the safety of Indonesian nationals abroad.
Arrival of Indonesian evacuees from Iran
The first group of 11 Indonesian citizens evacuated from Iran arrived safely at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 2025, marking the beginning of Indonesia’s efforts to repatriate its nationals amid escalating conflict in the region following Israeli military strikes.
The evacuees flew on a commercial flight via Istanbul, having first been transported by the Indonesian government through the Tehran-Baku corridor in Azerbaijan on June 21, along with 86 other Indonesian citizens. The overland journey from Tehran to Baku spanned approximately 16 hours before the group was flown out in stages.
“This evacuation is part of the Indonesian government’s step-by-step efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens overseas following the escalation of conflict in Iran,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a release on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, the arrival of 18 more Indonesian evacuees scheduled to land via Doha on Tuesday evening was delayed due to regional airspace closures. Their flight was diverted to Jeddah, and most are currently en route to Jakarta. Indonesian missions in Doha and Jeddah are providing assistance and accompaniment to ensure their safe return.
Another 68 Indonesians remain in Baku, awaiting further arrangements for repatriation, which the government is preparing in coordination with available flight options through Istanbul, Doha, or Jeddah.
The evacuation operation was made possible through close collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens (PWNI), the Indonesian embassies in Tehran and Baku, the Indonesian military (TNI), and with the support of the Iranian and Azerbaijani governments.
“The Indonesian government will continue to monitor developments in the Middle East and strengthen the Crisis Response Teams (CRTs) both at headquarters and at its overseas missions,” the statement continued. “Our missions are also identifying the impact of the current situation and providing assistance to affected Indonesian citizens.”
The Ministry further urged Indonesian nationals in the region to remain calm, follow security updates from local authorities, and contact their nearest Indonesian diplomatic mission if they encounter any issues.
